Esther and Sally Yoder, South Bend, 1 December 1956

My mother says that they had just baked a peach pie for their father. They were waiting for it to cool to take it to him in the hospital. My Aunt Sally was standing behind her mother when the minister came in and said: “Esther, we must pray, Truman has expired”. My aunt said that was what was most vivid in her mind, the phrase “Truman has expired.” She hadn’t heard of people expiring. When she realized what he actually meant she felt her legs give way and she had to cling to the chair her mother sat in.
